July 3, 1942 — October 12, 2023

As a beacon of faith, forever illuminating the hearts and minds of those he encountered, it is with
profound sorrow that we honor the memory of a truly remarkable soul, Very Rev. K. Mathai Cor
Episcopa, affectionately known as Mathai Achen.

Mathai Achen, born on July 3, 1942, in Mallassery, Pathanamthitta, Kerala, was the beloved son
of the late Mr. Ninan and Rachel Daniel. He was one of four children. He graduated college with
a Bachelor of Economics. Afterward, he went to seminary to receive his Bachelor of Divinity,
pursuing his true calling when he started preaching at the tender age of 8. Mathai Achen married
Mariamma Abraham, a nurse from the U.S., on April 14, 1975. He was ordained as a priest on
April 29, 1975, later joining his wife in New York on September 5, 1975. In 1976, they moved to
Philadelphia after a growing need for an Orthodox church arose. He pioneered the establishment
of the first Orthodox Church, which benefited members from various ecumenical churches.
While studying at Temple University, receiving his Bachelor of Accounting, they raised 3
cherished children, Sheeba, Sheena, and Justin. After graduating, he worked as a State Auditor
for the PA Department of Revenue.

Over the years, Mathai Achen served in St. Gregorios for 35 years and in various other parishes
later, including a 3-year missionary endeavor in Kottayam, tending to their spiritual needs. His
unwavering devotion to spiritual guidance and religious education has touched the lives of
countless individuals, shaping the faith of many.

His humility and kindness were sources of inspiration for all who had the privilege of knowing
him. An embodiment of boundless devotion and tireless dedication, his deep-rooted beliefs were
evident in every aspect of his life, from loving interactions with family to his compassionate
approach to ministry.

Mathai Achen is survived by his wife, Mariamma Mathai, and children, Sheeba and Peter Paily,
Sheena Jacob, and Justin and Princy Mathai. Grandchildren, Rebekah and Abigail Paily,
